Ria's Reflections

Pre-camp (25 May, Monday)
  • What sounds interesting about this project?
    • What sounds interesting about this project is that it involves creative thinking to build a prototype that withstands weight.
  • What do you think you can learn from this project?
    • I feel that I can learn about and apply physics theories in real life situations which, in this case, is where a water tower is to be built. I feel that brainstorming on real-life situations is essential to stimulate our thinking which will help us in the future.
  • Any immediate questions regarding the project?
    • Are we going to be filling water into the prototype constructed?
    • Why has specifically balsa wood been chosen amongst other materials to construct this water tower?
First Day (26 May, Tuesday)
  • What did you do today?
    • Today we carried out the construction of the water towers and competition of how much weight each group's water tower could hold.
  • What did you learn today?
    •  I learnt that it is important to be careful while planning and constructing the structure but being overcautious will slow us down.
  • How do you feel about today's activities?
    • I feel that the experience of making models of water towers with our own hands was very engaging and interesting.
Second Day (27 May, Wednesday)
  • What did you do today?
    • Today we presented on our models, techniques used, learning points and areas for improvement.
  • What did you learn today?
    • I learnt that the base must be strong, prototype must be light, tension must be divided amongst the full structure and resource usage must be planned properly.
    • I also learnt that theories and concepts learnt can be applied in real life and that communication is very important.
  • How do you feel about today's activities?
    • I feel the presentations gave us an opportunity to explain and elaborate about our group's projects and to learn from successes and learning points from other groups.
  • What new questions do you have regarding the discipline?
    • Which group is selected to present tomorrow on behalf of all students in Project 4?
Third Day (28 May, Thursday)
  • Project Sharing Sessions
    • We should understand how the provided equipment works so that we will use it properly.
    • We should ask for assistance whenever i doubt or facing difficulties.
    • We should think deeper into real-life situations using theories and concepts learnt in school
  • How do you feel about the SST-NTU Flagship programme?
    • I feel that being able to experience a course at NTU was very interesting. Given a chance to present what we have done gave us a platform to share our thoughts and experiences with others.
